Rome’s Early Water Transport Solutions

Rome’s Early Water Transport Solutions Prior to 273, when the very first elevated aqueduct, Aqua Anio Vetus, was built in Rome, residents who lived on hillsides had to travel further down to gather their water from natural sources. Outside of these aqueducts and springs, wells and rainwater-collecting cisterns were the sole technologies obtainable at the time to supply water to areas of higher elevation. Starting in the sixteenth century, a new program was introduced, using Acqua Vergine’s subterranean segments to generate water to Pincian Hill. As originally constructed, the aqueduct was provided along the length of its channel with pozzi (manholes) constructed at regular intervals. Though they were originally planned to make it possible to service the aqueduct, Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi started out using the manholes to get water from the channel, commencing when he obtained the property in 1543. Whilst the cardinal also had a cistern to collect rainwater, it couldn't supply enough water. Via an opening to the aqueduct that ran below his property, he was able to satisfy his water needs.
