Statues As a Staple of Vintage Art in Historic Greece
Statues As a Staple of Vintage Art in Historic Greece
The first freestanding sculpture was improved by the Archaic Greeks, a distinguished success since until then the sole carvings in existence were reliefs cut into walls and pillars. Kouros figures, sculptures of adolescent, handsome male or female (kore) Greeks, made up the bulk of the sculptures. The kouroi were seen by the Greeks to typify beauty and were sculpted with one foot leading and an uncompromising rigidity to their forward-facing poses; the male statues were always strapping, brawny, and unclothed. Life-sized versions of the kouroi appeared beginning in 650 BC. The Archaic period was tumultuous for the Greeks as they progressed into more polished forms of federal government and art, and acquired more data about the peoples and civilizations outside of Greece. But in spite of the disputes, the Greek civilization went on to progress, unabated.
