Rome’s Early Water Delivery Systems
Rome’s Early Water Delivery Systems Aqua Anio Vetus, the first raised aqueduct built in Rome, commenced delivering the many people living in the hills with water in 273 BC, even though they had relied on natural springs up till then. Outside of these aqueducts and springs, wells and rainwater-collecting cisterns were the only technologies around at the time to supply water to locations of high elevation. Beginning in the sixteenth century, a brand new strategy was introduced, using Acqua Vergine’s subterranean portions to generate water to Pincian Hill. Throughout the length of the aqueduct’s network were pozzi, or manholes, that gave entry.
Although they were initially developed to make it possible to service the aqueduct, Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi started out using the manholes to accumulate water from the channel, starting when he purchased the property in 1543. Despite the fact that the cardinal also had a cistern to get rainwater, it didn’t produce a sufficient amount of water. To give himself with a more streamlined system to obtain water, he had one of the manholes opened up, providing him access to the aqueduct below his property.
Water Features Lost to History
Water Features Lost to History Water fountains were originally practical in function, used to deliver water from rivers or springs to cities and villages, supplying the inhabitants with fresh water to drink, bathe, and prepare food with. A supply of water higher in elevation than the fountain was needed to pressurize the movement and send water squirting from the fountain's nozzle, a technology without equal until the late nineteenth century.
The splendor and spectacle of fountains make them ideal for historical monuments. The contemporary fountains of modern times bear little likeness to the very first water fountains. The first known water fountain was a stone basin carved that was used as a container for drinking water and ceremonial functions. 2,000 BC is when the earliest known stone fountain basins were originally used. Early fountains used in ancient civilizations relied on gravity to manipulate the circulation of water through the fountain. These ancient water fountains were built to be functional, often situated along aqueducts, streams and rivers to furnish drinking water. The people of Rome began constructing ornate fountains in 6 BC, most of which were bronze or stone masks of creatures and mythological representations. The remarkable aqueducts of Rome furnished water to the spectacular public fountains, most of which you can travel to today.
