Anglo Saxon Grounds at the Time of the Norman Conquest
Anglo Saxon Grounds at the Time of the Norman Conquest
Anglo-Saxons experienced great adjustments to their day-to-day lives in the latter half of the eleventh century due to the accession of the Normans. The Normans were better than the Anglo-Saxons at architecture and horticulture when they came into power. Nonetheless the Normans had to pacify the whole territory before they could focus on home life, domestic architecture, and decoration. Because of this, castles were cruder buildings than monasteries: Monasteries were often important stone buildings set in the biggest and most fecund valleys, while castles were erected on windy crests where their citizens dedicated time and space to tasks for offense and defense. The sterile fortresses did not provide for the quiet avocation of farming. The purest specimen of the early Anglo-Norman style of architecture existent today is Berkeley Castle. The keep is said to date from William the Conqueror's time. A big terrace meant for exercising and as a way to stop enemies from mining under the walls runs about the building. On one of these parapets is a scenic bowling green covered in grass and surrounded by an aged hedge of yew that has been designed into coarse battlements.

Rome’s Ingenious Water Delivery Systems
Rome’s Ingenious Water Delivery Systems
Rome’s first raised aqueduct, Aqua Anio Vetus, was built in 273 BC; before that, citizens residing at higher elevations had to rely on natural streams for their water. When aqueducts or springs weren’t available, people living at higher elevations turned to water taken from underground or rainwater, which was made available by wells and cisterns. From the beginning of the sixteenth century, water was routed to Pincian Hill by way of the underground channel of Acqua Vergine. During its initial construction, pozzi (or manholes) were positioned at set intervals along the aqueduct’s channel. Though they were primarily manufactured to make it possible to service the aqueduct, Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi began using the manholes to gather water from the channel, commencing when he bought the property in 1543. He didn’t get adequate water from the cistern that he had built on his property to gather rainwater. Fortunately, the aqueduct sat below his residence, and he had a shaft opened to give him access.
