Sculpture As a Staple of Classic Art in Ancient Greece The first freestanding sculpture was developed by the Archaic Greeks, a recognized achievement since until then the only carvings in existence were reliefs cut into walls and columns. Most of the freestanding statues were of youthful, winsome male or female (kore) Greeks and are known as kouros figures. The kouroi were believed by the Greeks to represent beauty and were sculpted with one foot leading and an uncompromising firmness to their forward-facing poses; the male statues were always strapping, brawny, and naked.
In about 650 BC, the variations of the kouroi became life-sized. The Archaic period was turbulent for the Greeks as they evolved into more sophisticated forms of government and art, and acquired more data about the peoples and civilizations outside of Greece. Equivalent to many other times of historical conflict, disagreements were commonplace, and there were battles between city-states like The Arcadian wars, the Spartan invasion of Samos.
