The early Anglo-Norman style of architecture is exemplified in Berkeley Castle, which is perhaps the most untouched sample we have. It is said that the keep was developed during William the Conqueror's time. As a strategy of deterring attackers from tunneling under the walls, an immense terrace surrounds the building. A scenic bowling green, covered in grass and bordered by battlements cut out of an ancient yew hedge, forms one of the terraces.
