Characteristics of Garden Sculpture in Archaic Greece Archaic Greeks were well known for developing the first freestanding statuary; up till then, most carvings were formed out of walls and pillars as reliefs. Younger, appealing male or female (kore) Greeks were the subject matter of most of the sculptures, or kouros figures. The kouroi were believed by the Greeks to embody beauty and were sculpted with one foot leading and an uncompromising rigidity to their forward-facing poses; the male statues were always strapping, brawny, and undressing. The kouroi grew to be life-sized beginning in 650 BC. A massive age of transformation for the Greeks, the Archaic period introduced about new forms of government, expressions of artwork, and a higher appreciation of people and cultures outside of Greece. Nonetheless, the Greek civilization was not slowed down by these battles.

In 1665 Bernini traveled to France, in what was to be his sole extended absence from Italy.
