Rome’s Early Water Delivery Solutions

Rome’s Early Water Delivery Solutions 67990870198.jpg Rome’s Early Water Delivery Solutions Rome’s 1st elevated aqueduct, Aqua Anio Vetus, was built in 273 BC; prior to that, people living at higher elevations had to depend on local creeks for their water. If citizens living at higher elevations did not have access to springs or the aqueduct, they’d have to rely on the other existing solutions of the time, cisterns that gathered rainwater from the sky and subterranean wells that drew the water from below ground. Starting in the sixteenth century, a brand new program was introduced, using Acqua Vergine’s subterranean sectors to generate water to Pincian Hill. Through its original building and construction, pozzi (or manholes) were placed at set intervals alongside the aqueduct’s channel. Whilst these manholes were manufactured to make it much easier to preserve the aqueduct, it was also possible to use containers to extract water from the channel, which was done by Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi from the time he acquired the property in 1543 to his passing in 1552. Whilst the cardinal also had a cistern to get rainwater, it didn’t provide enough water. To give himself with a much more efficient system to gather water, he had one of the manholes opened, offering him access to the aqueduct below his property.
