The Impact of the Norman Conquest on Anglo-Saxon Gardens
The Impact of the Norman Conquest on Anglo-Saxon Gardens The Anglo-Saxon way of life was significantly changed by the arrival of the Normans in the later eleventh century. At the time of the conquest, the Normans surpassed the Anglo-Saxons in building design and cultivation. But home life, household architecture, and decoration were out of the question until the Normans taken over the general population. Castles were more fundamental constructions and often built on blustery hills, where their tenants spent both time and space to practicing offense and defense, while monasteries were large stone buildings, commonly situated in the widest, most fertile hollows. Gardening, a quiet occupation, was impracticable in these fruitless fortifications. The best example of the early Anglo-Norman style of architecture existent in modern times is Berkeley Castle. The keep is reported to have been conceived during the time of William the Conqueror. An enormous terrace encompasses the building, serving as an impediment to assailants intending to dig under the castle walls. A scenic bowling green, enveloped in grass and surrounded by battlements clipped out of an ancient yew hedge, creates one of the terraces.
Characteristics of Outdoor Statues in Archaic Greece
Characteristics of Outdoor Statues in Archaic Greece
The initial freestanding statuary was developed by the Archaic Greeks, a notable accomplishment since until then the sole carvings in existence were reliefs cut into walls and pillars. Kouros figures, sculptures of young, attractive male or female (kore) Greeks, made up the bulk of the sculptures. The kouroi, regarded by the Greeks to portray beauty, had one foot stretched out of a rigid forward-facing pose and the male figurines were always undressed, with a strong, sturdy physique. Around 650 BC, life-sized versions of the kouroi began to be seen. The Archaic period was turbulent for the Greeks as they evolved into more refined forms of government and art, and acquired more information about the peoples and cultures outside of Greece. During this time and other durations of historic tumult, encounters often took place, most notably battles fought amongst city-states such as the Arcadian wars and the Spartan infiltration of Samos.
