The First Fountains
The First Fountains Villages and communities depended on working water fountains to funnel water for preparing food, washing, and cleaning up from nearby sources like ponds, streams, or creeks. In the years before electric power, the spray of fountains was powered by gravity only, often using an aqueduct or water resource located far away in the surrounding hills. The splendor and wonder of fountains make them appropriate for traditional monuments. Crude in design, the first water fountains did not look much like modern-day fountains. Basic stone basins crafted from local stone were the first fountains, used for religious purposes and drinking water. 2,000 BC is when the oldest identified stone fountain basins were actually used. The earliest civilizations that utilized fountains depended on gravity to push water through spigots. These ancient fountains were created to be functional, often situated along reservoirs, streams and rivers to provide drinking water. The Romans began constructing elaborate fountains in 6 BC, most of which were metallic or stone masks of animals and mythological heroes. Water for the open fountains of Rome was delivered to the city via a intricate system of water aqueducts. The Use of Outdoor Water Fountains As Water Elements
