The Results of the Norman Invasion on Anglo-Saxon Garden Design

The skill of the Normans exceeded the Anglo-Saxons' in architecture and farming at the time of the conquest. But yet there was no time for home life, domestic design, and adornment until the Normans had overcome the whole region. Because of this, castles were cruder buildings than monasteries: Monasteries were often immense stone buildings set in the biggest and most fecund valleys, while castles were constructed on windy crests where their residents dedicated time and space to tasks for offense and defense. The serene method of gardening was unrealistic in these dreary bastions. Berkeley Castle, maybe the most unspoiled model of the early Anglo-Norman style of architecture, still exists now. The keep is thought to date from the time of William the Conqueror. A monumental terrace serves as a discouraging factor to invaders who would try to mine the walls of the building. On one of these parapets is a picturesque bowling green covered in grass and bordered by an aged hedge of yew that has been designed into coarse battlements.

Ancient Greece: The Beginnings of Garden Statue Design

Ancient Greece: The Beginnings of Garden Statue Design Sculptors adorned the complex columns and archways with renderings of the greek gods until the period came to a close and more Greeks had begun to think of their religion as superstitious rather than sacred; at that point, it grew to be more common for sculptors be paid to show ordinary individuals as well.Ancient Greece: Beginnings Garden Statue Design 9700070615234568139.jpg Portraiture, which would be recognized by the Romans upon their annexation of Greek society became conventional as well, and thriving family members would at times commission a rendering of their forebears to be placed in enormous familial tombs. A point of artistic progression, the use of sculpture and alternate art forms transformed through the Greek Classical period, so it is not entirely accurate to say that the arts served only one function. Whether to gratify a visual desire or to rejoice in the figures of religion, Greek sculpture was an inventive method in the ancient world, which may well be what attracts our focus today.
