Gian Lorenzo Bernini's Water Features In Rome’s city center, there are countless easily recognized fountains. One of the greatest sculptors and artists of the 17th century, almost all of them were designed, conceived and constructed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. Also a city architect, he had skills as a water feature designer, and remnants of his life's work are evident throughout the roads of Rome. An expert in historical Greek architecture, he used this knowledge as a starting point and melded it flawlessly with Roman marble, most notably in the Vatican. Though he was influenced by many, Michelangelo had the most serious impact on him, both personally and professionally.
