Archaic Greek Artwork: Garden Statuary
Archaic Greek Artwork: Garden Statuary Archaic Greeks were well known for providing the first freestanding statuary; up until then, most carvings were constructed out of walls and pillars as reliefs. Most of these freestanding sculptures were what is known as kouros figures, statues of young, attractive male or female (kore) Greeks. Thought of by Greeks to embody beauty, the kouroi were structured into inflexible, forward facing positions with one foot outstretched, and the male statues were usually nude, muscular, and athletic. Around 650 BC, life-size variations of the kouroi began to be observed. The Archaic period was an amazing time of transformation for the Greeks as they expanded into new forms of government, produced unique expressions of art, and achieved information of the people and cultures outside of Greece. Conflicts like The Arcadian wars, the Spartan invasion of Samos, and other wars among city-states are indicatory of the tumultuous nature of the time, which was similar to other periods of historical disturbance. However, these conflicts did not significantly hinder the advancement of the Greek civilization.
