Back Story of Garden Fountains

Back Story of Garden Fountains The translation of hundreds of classical Greek texts into Latin was commissioned by the learned Pope Nicholas V who led the Church in Rome from 1397 till 1455. Embellishing Rome and making it the worthy capital of the Christian world was at the center of his ambitions. Starting in 1453, the ruined ancient Roman aqueduct known as the Aqua Vergine which had brought fresh drinking water into the city from eight miles away, underwent reconstruction at the bidding of the Pope. The ancient Roman tradition of building an imposing commemorative fountain at the point where an aqueduct arrived, also known as a mostra, was resurrected by Nicholas V. The present-day site of the Trevi Fountain was previously occupied by a wall fountain commissioned by the Pope and built by the architect Leon Battista Alberti. The aqueduct he had reconditioned included modifications and extensions which eventually allowed it to supply water to the Trevi Fountain as well as the renowned baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and the Piazza Navona.

Fountains of this kind need to be light, therefore, they are typically made of resin (resembling stone) or fiberglass. Free-standing fountains, often referred to as floor fountains, are sizable, have a basin positioned on the ground and a smooth side which leans against a wall. Aqueducts: The Answer to Rome's Water Challenges

Aqueducts: The Answer to Rome's Water Challenges Prior to 273, when the first elevated aqueduct, Aqua Anio Vetus, was made in Roma, residents who dwelled on hillsides had to go further down to collect their water from natural sources. When aqueducts or springs weren’t easily accessible, people dwelling at raised elevations turned to water removed from underground or rainwater, which was made possible by wells and cisterns. Beginning in the sixteenth century, a unique approach was introduced, using Acqua Vergine’s subterranean sections to generate water to Pincian Hill.Aqueducts: Answer Rome's Water Challenges 1382492794422288398.jpg As originally constructed, the aqueduct was provided along the length of its channel with pozzi (manholes) constructed at regular intervals. The manholes made it easier to clean the channel, but it was also achievable to use buckets to extract water from the aqueduct, as we discovered with Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi when he operated the property from 1543 to 1552, the year he passed away. It appears that, the rainwater cistern on his property wasn’t sufficient to satisfy his needs. That is when he decided to create an access point to the aqueduct that ran below his residence.
