Thought of by Greeks to characterize splendour, the kouroi were structured into inflexible, forward facing poses with one foot outstretched, and the male statues were always nude, well-built, and athletic. Life-sized versions of the kouroi appeared beginning in 650 BC. Throughout the Archaic period, a big time of change, the Greeks were evolving new forms of government, expressions of art, and a greater awareness of people and cultures outside Greece. During this time and other durations of historic tumultuousness, encounters often happened, including battles fought amongst city-states such as the Arcadian wars and the Spartan infiltration of Samos.

Aqueducts: The Solution to Rome's Water Troubles Rome’s 1st raised aqueduct, Aqua Anio Vetus, was built in 273 BC; prior to that, residents living at higher elevations had to rely on natural creeks for their water. Over this time period, there were only 2 other innovations capable of delivering water to high areas, subterranean wells and cisterns, which accumulated rainwater. Beginning in the sixteenth century, a newer strategy was introduced, using Acqua Vergine’s subterranean sectors to generate water to Pincian Hill. During its original building and construction, pozzi (or manholes) were located at set intervals along the aqueduct’s channel. The manholes made it more straightforward to thoroughly clean the channel, but it was also achievable to use buckets to extract water from the aqueduct, as we observed with Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi when he owned the property from 1543 to 1552, the year he passed away. He didn’t get adequate water from the cistern that he had manufactured on his property to collect rainwater. To provide himself with a more practical system to obtain water, he had one of the manholes exposed, giving him access to the aqueduct below his residence.
