Anglo Saxon Gardens at the Time of the Norman Conquest
Anglo Saxon Gardens at the Time of the Norman Conquest
The arrival of the Normans in the later half of the 11th century considerably altered The Anglo-Saxon ways of living. Engineering and gardening were skills that the Normans excelled in, trumping that of the Anglo-Saxons at the time of the occupation. But before concentrating on home-life or having the occasion to contemplate domestic architecture or decoration, the Normans had to subjugate an entire population. Because of this, castles were cruder constructions than monasteries: Monasteries were often important stone buildings located in the biggest and most fecund valleys, while castles were erected on windy crests where their residents devoted time and space to projects for offense and defense. The calm method of gardening was unrealistic in these dreary bastions. The early Anglo-Norman style of architecture is represented in Berkeley Castle, which is most likely the most untouched example we have. The keep is said to date from the time of William the Conqueror. A big terrace recommended for exercising and as a way to stop enemies from mining under the walls runs around the building. On one of these parapets is a picturesque bowling green covered in grass and enclosed by an aged hedge of yew that has been shaped into coarse battlements.
Gian Lorenzo Bernini's Public Fountains
Gian Lorenzo Bernini's Public Fountains There are lots of famed Roman fountains in its city center. Gian Lorenzo Bernini, one of the best sculptors and artists of the 17th century designed, created and built virtually all of them. Marks of his life's efforts are apparent throughout the avenues of Rome simply because, in addition to his skills as a water feature designer, he was also a city builder. Bernini's father, a renowned Florentine sculptor, mentored his young son, and they ultimately moved to Rome, in order to fully express their art, primarily in the form of public water fountains and water features. The young Bernini earned compliments from Popes and relevant artists alike, and was an excellent employee. He was originally celebrated for his sculpture. Most famously in the Vatican, he made use of a base of experience in classic Greek architecture and melded it effortlessly with Roman marble. Though he was influenced by many, Michelangelo had the most serious effect on him, both personally and professionally.
