Aqueducts: Solution Rome's Water Troubles 628239445269206200.jpg Aqueducts: The Solution to Rome's Water Troubles Rome’s 1st raised aqueduct, Aqua Anio Vetus, was built in 273 BC; before that, residents residing at higher elevations had to rely on natural creeks for their water. Outside of these aqueducts and springs, wells and rainwater-collecting cisterns were the sole technologies around at the time to supply water to segments of higher elevation. Starting in the sixteenth century, a new strategy was introduced, using Acqua Vergine’s subterranean sectors to generate water to Pincian Hill. As originally constructed, the aqueduct was provided along the length of its channel with pozzi (manholes) constructed at regular intervals. Though they were initially designed to make it possible to support the aqueduct, Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi started using the manholes to gather water from the channel, commencing when he bought the property in 1543. Apparently, the rainwater cistern on his property wasn’t enough to meet his needs. To provide himself with a more effective way to gather water, he had one of the manholes opened, offering him access to the aqueduct below his property.
