The Godfather Of Rome's Public Fountains There are countless famous water fountains in the city center of Rome. Almost all of them were planned, designed and built by one of the finest sculptors and artists of the 17th century, Gian Lorenzo Bernini. His expertise as a water feature developer and also as a city architect, are obvious all through the roads of Rome. Original Water Supply Techniques in Rome
Original Water Supply Techniques in Rome Rome’s very first elevated aqueduct, Aqua Anio Vetus, was built in 273 BC; before that, citizens residing at higher elevations had to rely on local creeks for their water. Outside of these aqueducts and springs, wells and rainwater-collecting cisterns were the sole techniques available at the time to supply water to spots of high elevation. Starting in the sixteenth century, a unique program was introduced, using Acqua Vergine’s subterranean portions to provide water to Pincian Hill. As originally constructed, the aqueduct was provided along the length of its channel with pozzi (manholes) constructed at regular intervals. Whilst these manholes were created to make it much easier to manage the aqueduct, it was also possible to use containers to remove water from the channel, which was employed by Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi from the time he invested in the property in 1543 to his death in 1552. Reportedly, the rainwater cistern on his property wasn’t enough to satisfy his needs. By using an orifice to the aqueduct that ran under his property, he was set to fulfill his water wants.
