A Chronicle of Garden Water Fountains

A Chronicle of Garden Water Fountains Pope Nicholas V, himself a learned man, reigned the Roman Catholic Church from 1397 to 1455 during which time he commissioned many translations of ancient classical Greek texts into Latin. Embellishing Rome and making it the worthy capital of the Christian world was at the center of his objectives. Reconstruction of the Acqua Vergine, a desolate Roman aqueduct which had transported fresh drinking water into the city from eight miles away, began in 1453 at the bidding of the Pope. Building a mostra, an imposing commemorative fountain built by ancient Romans to memorialize the entry point of an aqueduct, was a tradition revived by Nicholas V. The Trevi Fountain now occupies the space formerly filled with a wall fountain crafted by Leon Battista Albert, an architect employed by the Pope. Adjustments and extensions, included in the restored aqueduct, eventually provided the Trevi Fountain and the well-known baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and Piazza Navona with the necessary water supply.

Water Delivery Strategies in Ancient Rome

Water Delivery Strategies Ancient Rome 83003590001.jpg Water Delivery Strategies in Ancient Rome Rome’s very first elevated aqueduct, Aqua Anio Vetus, was built in 273 BC; prior to that, inhabitants living at higher elevations had to rely on natural creeks for their water. Over this time period, there were only two other techniques capable of offering water to high areas, subterranean wells and cisterns, which gathered rainwater. Starting in the sixteenth century, a new method was introduced, using Acqua Vergine’s subterranean segments to provide water to Pincian Hill. As originally constructed, the aqueduct was provided along the length of its channel with pozzi (manholes) constructed at regular intervals. Although they were originally developed to make it possible to support the aqueduct, Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi began using the manholes to collect water from the channel, commencing when he acquired the property in 1543. Apparently, the rainwater cistern on his property wasn’t sufficient to meet his needs. That is when he made a decision to create an access point to the aqueduct that ran below his property.
