The Main Characteristics of Ancient Greek Statuary
The Main Characteristics of Ancient Greek Statuary Archaic Greeks were known for developing the first freestanding statuary; up until then, most carvings were formed out of walls and pillars as reliefs.
Most of these freestanding sculptures were what is known as kouros figures, statues of young, attractive male or female (kore) Greeks. The kouroi, viewed as by the Greeks to represent beauty, had one foot extended out of a fixed forward-facing pose and the male figurines were always undressed, with a strong, strong physique. In about 650 BC, the variations of the kouroi became life-sized. The Archaic period was tumultuous for the Greeks as they progressed into more refined forms of government and art, and obtained more data about the peoples and cultures outside of Greece. Similar to other periods of historical conflict, conflicts were common, and there were struggles between city-states like The Arcadian wars, the Spartan invasion of Samos.
