"Primitive" Greek Art: Garden Statuary
"Primitive" Greek Art: Garden Statuary
The Archaic Greeks developed the very first freestanding statuary, an impressive achievement as most sculptures up until then had been reliefs cut into walls and pillars. For the most part the statues, or kouros figures, were of adolescent and nice-looking male or female (kore) Greeks. The kouroi were considered by the Greeks to embody beauty and were sculpted with one foot leading and an uncompromising rigidity to their forward-facing poses; the male statues were always strapping, brawny, and naked. Around 650 BC, life-size forms of the kouroi began to be observed. During the Archaic time, a great time of changes, the Greeks were developing new forms of government, expressions of art, and a larger awareness of people and cultures outside Greece. But in spite of the conflicts, the Greek civilization continued to progress, unabated.
The Dispersion of Outdoor Fountain Design Knowledge
The Dispersion of Outdoor Fountain Design Knowledge The circulated reports and illustrated books of the time contributed to the advancements of scientific technology, and were the chief methods of transmitting practical hydraulic concepts and water fountain suggestions throughout Europe. An unnamed French water fountain developer became an globally celebrated hydraulic innovator in the late 1500's. With Royal mandates in Brussels, London and Germany, he began his work in Italy, acquiring expertise in garden design and grottoes with built-in and clever water hydraulics. “The Principles of Moving Forces”, a publication that turned into the fundamental text on hydraulic mechanics and engineering, was composed by him toward the end of his life in France. Updating key hydraulic breakthroughs of classical antiquity, the book also details contemporary hydraulic technologies. Dominant among these works were those of Archimedes, the inventor of the water screw, a mechanical method of transferring water. Sunlight warmed the liquid in two hidden vessels adjoining to the decorative water feature were shown in an illustration. The end result: the fountain is triggered by the heated water expanding and rising up the piping. Pumps, water wheels, water features and garden pond designs are included in the book.
