"Primitive" Greek Artistry: Large Statuary Archaic Greeks were known for providing the first freestanding statuary; up till then, most carvings were formed out of walls and pillars as reliefs.
Most of the freestanding statues were of young, winsome male or female (kore) Greeks and are known as kouros figures. The kouroi, viewed by the Greeks to exemplify beauty, had one foot extended out of a strict forward-facing pose and the male figurines were always undressed, with a strong, sturdy physique. Life-sized versions of the kouroi appeared beginning in 650 BC. The Archaic period was tumultuous for the Greeks as they evolved into more polished forms of government and art, and obtained more information about the peoples and civilizations outside of Greece.
