Sculpture As a Staple of Classic Art in Historic Greece The initial freestanding statuary was improved by the Archaic Greeks, a notable success since until then the sole carvings in existence were reliefs cut into walls and columns.
Most of these freestanding sculptures were what is known as kouros figures, statues of young, attractive male or female (kore) Greeks. Representing beauty to the Greeks, the kouroi were crafted to look rigid and always had foot in front; the males were healthy, robust, and nude. Around 650 BC, life-sized models of the kouroi began to be seen. During the Archaic period, a great time of changes, the Greeks were evolving new sorts of government, expressions of art, and a deeper comprehension of people and cultures outside Greece. Conflicts like The Arcadian wars, the Spartan invasion of Samos, and other wars among city-states are indicative of the tumultuous nature of the time period, which was similar to other periods of historical upset. However, these conflicts did not significantly hinder the advancement of the Greek civilization.

The water from rivers and other sources was initially provided to the residents of nearby communities and municipalities by way of water fountains, whose purpose was largely practical, not aesthetic. A source of water higher in elevation than the fountain was needed to pressurize the movement and send water squirting from the fountain's spout, a technology without equal until the later part of the nineteenth century. The elegance and spectacle of fountains make them ideal for historic memorials. The contemporary fountains of today bear little resemblance to the first water fountains. Created for drinking water and ceremonial functions, the 1st fountains were basic carved stone basins. Natural stone basins as fountains have been discovered from 2,000 BC. The force of gravity was the energy source that operated the initial water fountains. These original water fountains were built to be functional, often situated along reservoirs, streams and waterways to supply drinking water. The Romans began constructing decorative fountains in 6 B.C., most of which were metallic or stone masks of animals and mythological heroes. A well-designed system of reservoirs and aqueducts kept Rome's public water fountains supplied with fresh water.
