The Main Characteristics of Ancient Greek Statues
The Main Characteristics of Ancient Greek Statues The initial freestanding statuary was designed by the Archaic Greeks, a notable achievement since until then the sole carvings in existence were reliefs cut into walls and columns.
Kouros figures, sculptures of adolescent, handsome male or female (kore) Greeks, made up the greater part of the statues. The kouroi were seen by the Greeks to typify beauty and were sculpted with one foot leading and an uncompromising firmness to their forward-facing poses; the male statues were always strapping, brawny, and naked. Life-sized versions of the kouroi appeared beginning in 650 BC. The Archaic period was tumultuous for the Greeks as they evolved into more polished forms of federal government and art, and gained more information about the peoples and cultures outside of Greece. The Arcadian conflicts, the Spartan penetration of Samos, and other wars between city-states are examples of the sorts of conflicts that emerged commonly, which is consistent with other times of historical change.
The Source of Today's Outdoor Fountains
The Source of Today's Outdoor Fountains Himself a highly educated man, Pope Nicholas V headed the Roman Catholic Church from 1397 till 1455 and was responsible for the translation of scores of ancient texts from their original Greek into Latin. He undertook the embellishment of Rome to turn it into the worthy seat of the Christian world. In 1453 the Pope commissioned the rebuilding of the Aqua Vergine, an ancient Roman aqueduct which had carried fresh drinking water into the city from eight miles away. A mostra, a monumental dedicatory fountain built by ancient Romans to mark the point of arrival of an aqueduct, was a custom which was restored by Nicholas V. The architect Leon Battista Alberti was commissioned by the Pope to construct a wall fountain where we now find the Trevi Fountain. The Trevi Fountain as well as the well-known baroque fountains located in the Piazza del Popolo and the Piazza Navona were eventually supplied with water from the altered aqueduct he had reconstructed.
