Every 3-4 months, garden fountains should go through a serious cleaning. Prior to cleaning, all of the water must be removed. Then use mild soap and a soft sponge to clean the innner part of the reservoir. If there is detailed artwork, you might need to use a toothbrush for those hard-to-reach areas. Do not leave any soap deposit inside of or on the fountain.
It is highly suggested taking the pump apart to better clean the inside and remove any plankton or calcium. To make it less difficult, soak it in vinegar for a while before cleaning. Neither rain water nor mineral water contain substances that will accumulate inside the pump, so use either over tap water if possible.
Finally, be sure to have a quick look at your fountain every day and add water if you notice that the level is depleted. If the water level slides below the pump’s intake level, it can damage the pump and cause it to burn out - something you don't want to happen!
