The Source of Today's Outdoor Fountains The translation of hundreds of ancient Greek texts into Latin was commissioned by the learned Pope Nicholas V who ruled the Church in Rome from 1397 until 1455. In order to make Rome deserving of being the capital of the Christian world, the Pope decided to enhance the beauty of the city. At the behest of the Pope, the Aqua Vergine, a ruined aqueduct which had transported clean drinking water into Rome from eight miles away, was restored starting in 1453. The ancient Roman tradition of building an imposing commemorative fountain at the location where an aqueduct arrived, also known as a mostra, was resurrected by Nicholas V. The architect Leon Battista Alberti was directed by the Pope to put up a wall fountain where we now find the Trevi Fountain. Changes and extensions, included in the restored aqueduct, eventually supplied the Trevi Fountain and the well-known baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and Piazza Navona with the necessary water supply.
