The Beginnings of Modern Wall Fountains

The Beginnings of Modern Wall Fountains Pope Nicholas V, himself a well educated man, reigned the Roman Catholic Church from 1397 to 1455 during which time he commissioned many translations of ancient classic Greek texts into Latin. Beautifying Rome and making it the worthy capital of the Christian world was at the center of his ambitions. At the behest of the Pope, the Aqua Vergine, a damaged aqueduct which had carried clean drinking water into Rome from eight miles away, was restored starting in 1453.Beginnings Modern Wall Fountains 18950258980477910.jpg The ancient Roman custom of building an imposing commemorative fountain at the point where an aqueduct arrived, also known as a mostra, was revived by Nicholas V. The architect Leon Battista Alberti was commissioned by the Pope to construct a wall fountain where we now see the Trevi Fountain. The aqueduct he had reconditioned included modifications and extensions which eventually enabled it to supply water to the Trevi Fountain as well as the famed baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and the Piazza Navona.

Anglo-Saxon Landscapes at the Time of the Norman Conquest

Anglo-Saxon Landscapes at the Time of the Norman Conquest The Anglo-Saxon way of life was significantly changed by the introduction of the Normans in the later eleventh century. Architecture and gardening were attributes that the Normans excelled in, trumping that of the Anglo-Saxons at the time of the occupation. But before centering on home-life or having the occasion to contemplate domestic architecture or decoration, the Normans had to subjugate an entire population.Anglo-Saxon Landscapes Time Norman Conquest 4844032727391827.jpg Because of this, castles were cruder structures than monasteries: Monasteries were frequently significant stone buildings located in the biggest and most fertile valleys, while castles were erected on windy crests where their citizens dedicated time and space to projects for offense and defense. The sterile fortresses did not provide for the quiet avocation of farming. The purest example of the early Anglo-Norman style of architecture existent today is Berkeley Castle. The keep is said to date from William the Conqueror's time. As a technique of deterring assailants from tunneling under the walls, an immense terrace encompasses the building. On one of these parapets is a picturesque bowling green covered in grass and enclosed by an aged hedge of yew that has been designed into coarse battlements.
