Anglo-Saxon Grounds at the Time of the Norman Conquest Anglo-Saxons encountered extraordinary adjustments to their day-to-day lives in the latter half of the eleventh century due to the accession of the Normans.
At the time of the conquest, the Normans surpassed the Anglo-Saxons in building design and cultivation. But yet there was no time for home life, domestic architecture, and adornment until the Normans had conquered the whole region. Most often designed upon windy peaks, castles were basic structures that allowed their inhabitants to devote time and space to offensive and defensive strategies, while monasteries were rambling stone buildings frequently added in only the most fecund, extensive valleys. Relaxing activities such as gardening were out of place in these destitute citadels. Berkeley Castle, maybe the most uncorrupted style of the early Anglo-Norman style of architecture, still exists today. The keep is said to date from William the Conqueror's time. A big terrace meant for strolling and as a means to stop enemies from mining below the walls runs about the building. One of these terraces, a charming bowling green, is covered grass and flanked by an ancient yew hedge cut into the figure of crude battlements.

Himself a highly educated man, Pope Nicholas V led the Roman Catholic Church from 1397 till 1455 and was responsible for the translation of hundreds of ancient documents from their original Greek into Latin. Embellishing Rome and making it the worthy capital of the Christian world was at the heart of his objectives. In 1453 the Pope commissioned the repairing of the Aqua Vergine, an ancient Roman aqueduct which had carried fresh drinking water into the city from eight miles away. Building a mostra, a grandiose commemorative fountain built by ancient Romans to memorialize the entry point of an aqueduct, was a custom revived by Nicholas V. The architect Leon Battista Alberti was directed by the Pope to construct a wall fountain where we now see the Trevi Fountain. The Trevi Fountain as well as the well-known baroque fountains located in the Piazza del Popolo and the Piazza Navona were eventually supplied with water from the modified aqueduct he had reconstructed.
