The Fountains
The Fountains
The water from springs and other sources was initially supplied to the citizens of nearby towns and municipalities via water fountains, whose purpose was largely practical, not artistic. A source of water higher in elevation than the fountain was required to pressurize the movement and send water squirting from the fountain's nozzle, a system without equal until the late 19th century. Fountains spanning history have been designed as memorials, impressing hometown citizens and visitors alike. Crude in style, the very first water fountains didn't look much like contemporary fountains. Designed for drinking water and ceremonial purposes, the initial fountains were very simple carved stone basins. 2000 BC is when the earliest known stone fountain basins were actually used. The first fountains put to use in ancient civilizations relied on gravity to control the flow of water through the fountain. Positioned near reservoirs or creeks, the practical public water fountains supplied the local population with fresh drinking water. The people of Rome began creating decorative fountains in 6 BC, most of which were bronze or stone masks of wildlife and mythological characters. The City of Rome had an elaborate system of aqueducts that supplied the water for the countless fountains that were placed throughout the community.

With Royal mandates in Brussels, London and Germany, he began his work in Italy, acquiring expertise in garden design and grottoes with incorporated and ingenious water features. “The Principles of Moving Forces”, a publication which became the fundamental book on hydraulic mechanics and engineering, was composed by him toward the end of his life in France. Describing contemporary hydraulic systems, the publication furthermore modified key hydraulic advancements of classical antiquity.
Dominant among these works were those of Archimedes, the inventor of the water screw, a mechanical way of moving water. An decorative water feature with the sun heating the water in two vessels hidden in an nearby accommodation was shown in one illustration.
