Rome’s Early Water Transport Solutions

Rome’s Early Water Transport Solutions Aqua Anio Vetus, the first raised aqueduct founded in Rome, commenced providing the people living in the hills with water in 273 BC, although they had counted on natural springs up till then. If inhabitants living at higher elevations did not have access to springs or the aqueduct, they’d have to be dependent on the remaining existing systems of the day, cisterns that compiled rainwater from the sky and subterranean wells that drew the water from under ground. Beginning in the sixteenth century, a new strategy was introduced, using Acqua Vergine’s subterranean portions to generate water to Pincian Hill. Pozzi, or manholes, were constructed at standard stretches along the aqueduct’s channel. Whilst these manholes were created to make it easier to sustain the aqueduct, it was also feasible to use buckets to remove water from the channel, which was exercised by Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi from the time he bought the property in 1543 to his passing in 1552. He didn’t get a sufficient quantity of water from the cistern that he had manufactured on his residential property to gather rainwater. Fortunately, the aqueduct sat directly below his residence, and he had a shaft opened to give him access.

Anglo-Saxon Gardens at the Time of the Norman Conquest

Anglo-Saxon Gardens at the Time of the Norman Conquest The Anglo-Saxon way of life was dramatically changed by the arrival of the Normans in the later eleventh century. At the time of the conquest, the Normans surpassed the Anglo-Saxons in building design and cultivation. But before focusing on home-life or having the occasion to think about domestic architecture or decoration, the Normans had to subjugate an entire society. Monasteries and castles served separate purposes, so while monasteries were large stone structures built in only the most fruitful, wide dales, castles were set upon blustery knolls where the residents focused on understanding offensive and defensive techniques. The serene method of gardening was unrealistic in these dreary bastions. Berkeley Castle is probably the most complete model in existence nowadays of the early Anglo-Norman style of architecture. The keep is thought to date from the time of William the Conqueror. An enormous terrace encompasses the building, serving as an obstacle to attackers trying to excavate under the castle walls. A scenic bowling green, enveloped in grass and surrounded by battlements clipped out of an ancient yew hedge, forms one of the terraces.

The Beautiful First Wonders by Bernini

The Beautiful First Wonders by Bernini The Barcaccia, a stunning water fountain constructed at the base of the Trinita dei Monti in Piaza di Spagna, was Bernini's earliest water fountain. To this day, you will see Roman residents and vacation goers occupying this area to revel in chit chatter and being among other people. Bernini would without a doubt have been happy to know that people still flock to what has become one the city's most fashionable areas, that around his amazing fountain. In about 1630, the great master designed the first fountain of his career at the behest of Pope Ubano VIII. People can now see the fountain as an illustration of a great ship gradually sinking into the Mediterranean. According to 16th century texts, a great flood of the Tevere covered the entire area in water, an event which was memorialized by the magnificent fountain. Absenting himself from Italy only once in his life for a long-lasting period of time, in 1665 Bernini traveled to France.
