Bernini’s Very First Italian Fountains

Bernini’s Very First Italian FountainsBernini’s First Italian Fountains 68889610183977645.jpg The Barcaccia, a beautiful water fountain constructed at the base of the Trinita dei Monti in Piaza di Spagna, was Bernini's earliest fountain. To this day, this spot is filled with Roman locals and tourists alike who enjoy conversation and each other's company. Today, the city streets around Bernini's fountain are a trendy place where people go to gather, something which the artist would have been pleased to learn. In about 1630, the great artist designed the first fountain of his career at the behest of Pope Ubano VIII. People can now see the fountain as an illustration of a commanding ship slowly sinking into the Mediterranean. Period writings dating back to the 16th century indicate that the fountain was constructed as a memorial to those who lost their lives in the great flooding of the Tevere. In 1665, France was graced by Bernini's only prolonged journey outside of Italy.

Anglo-Saxon Landscapes at the Time of the Norman Conquest

Anglo-Saxon Landscapes at the Time of the Norman Conquest The arrival of the Normans in the 2nd half of the 11th century irreparably transformed The Anglo-Saxon lifestyle. Architecture and horticulture were skills that the Normans excelled in, trumping that of the Anglo-Saxons at the time of the occupation. But before concentrating on home-life or having the occasion to consider domestic architecture or decoration, the Normans had to subjugate an entire society.Anglo-Saxon Landscapes Time Norman Conquest 79828395647676.jpg Monasteries and castles served different purposes, so while monasteries were large stone structures built in only the most fruitful, wide dales, castles were set upon blustery knolls where the residents focused on learning offensive and defensive strategies. Gardening, a quiet occupation, was impracticable in these unproductive fortifications. Berkeley Castle is perhaps the most unchanged model in existence today of the early Anglo-Norman style of architecture. The keep is thought to date from the time of William the Conqueror. An enormous terrace encompasses the building, serving as an obstacle to attackers attempting to excavate under the castle walls. On one of these parapets is a scenic bowling green covered in grass and surrounded by an aged hedge of yew that has been designed into coarse battlements.
