When aqueducts or springs weren’t easily accessible, people living at greater elevations turned to water pulled from underground or rainwater, which was made possible by wells and cisterns. From the beginning of the sixteenth century, water was routed to Pincian Hill via the subterranean channel of Acqua Vergine. As originally constructed, the aqueduct was provided along the length of its channel with pozzi (manholes) constructed at regular intervals. Even though they were initially manufactured to make it possible to support the aqueduct, Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi started using the manholes to gather water from the channel, commencing when he acquired the property in 1543. Though the cardinal also had a cistern to amass rainwater, it couldn't supply sufficient water. To provide himself with a more streamlined way to obtain water, he had one of the manholes exposed, providing him access to the aqueduct below his property.
