Bernini's Fountains
Bernini's Fountains There are many renowned water fountains in the city center of Rome.
One of the finest sculptors and artists of the 17th century, almost all of them were designed, conceived and built by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. Also a city designer, he had abilities as a water feature designer, and traces of his life's work are evident throughout the streets of Rome. Ultimately transferring to Rome to totally show their artwork, chiefly in the form of community water fountains, Bernini’s father, a renowned Florentine sculptor, mentored his young son. An exemplary employee, Bernin received compliments and the patronage of popes and well known painters. He was initially recognized for his sculpture. An expert in classic Greek architecture, he used this knowledge as a base and melded it flawlessly with Roman marble, most remarkably in the Vatican. Though a variety of artists impacted his artistic endeavors, Michelangelo influenced him the most.
The History of Outdoor Water Fountains
The History of Outdoor Water Fountains Pope Nicholas V, himself a learned man, reigned the Roman Catholic Church from 1397 to 1455 during which time he commissioned many translations of ancient classical Greek texts into Latin. Starting in 1453, the ruined ancient Roman aqueduct known as the Aqua Vergine which had brought fresh drinking water into the city from eight miles away, underwent reconstruction at the behest of the Pope. A mostra, a monumental commemorative fountain constructed by ancient Romans to mark the point of arrival of an aqueduct, was a tradition which was revived by Nicholas V. The architect Leon Battista Alberti was commissioned by the Pope to build a wall fountain where we now see the Trevi Fountain. Changes and extensions, included in the repaired aqueduct, eventually supplied the Trevi Fountain and the well-known baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and Piazza Navona with the necessary water supply.
