Rome’s Ingenious Water Delivery Solutions Rome’s 1st raised aqueduct, Aqua Anio Vetus, was built in 273 BC; before that, people residing at higher elevations had to depend on natural creeks for their water. When aqueducts or springs weren’t easily accessible, people dwelling at greater elevations turned to water drawn from underground or rainwater, which was made possible by wells and cisterns. In the early 16th century, the city began to use the water that ran underground through Acqua Vergine to furnish drinking water to Pincian Hill. The aqueduct’s channel was made accessible by pozzi, or manholes, that were installed along its length when it was 1st engineered. Whilst these manholes were provided to make it easier to manage the aqueduct, it was also possible to use containers to extract water from the channel, which was practiced by Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi from the time he purchased the property in 1543 to his death in 1552.
Apparently, the rainwater cistern on his property wasn’t sufficient to meet his needs. That is when he decided to create an access point to the aqueduct that ran below his residential property.
