Outdoor Fountains: The Minoan Society

Outdoor Fountains: Minoan Society 962541966874.jpg Outdoor Fountains: The Minoan Society During archaeological excavations on the island of Crete, various varieties of channels have been detected. In conjunction with offering water, they dispersed water which accumulated from deluges or waste. Rock and terracotta were the materials of choice for these conduits. Whenever prepared from terracotta, they were generally in the form of canals and circular or rectangular conduits. These included cone-like and U-shaped clay conduits that were exclusive to the Minoans. Terracotta pipelines were employed to circulate water at Knossos Palace, running up to three meters below the floor surfaces. These Minoan pipes were also utilized for amassing and stocking water, not just circulation. In order to make this possible, the piping had to be tailored to handle: Subterranean Water Transportation: It’s not really known why the Minoans required to move water without it being enjoyed. Quality Water Transportation: Many historians think that these pipes were employed to develop a separate distribution system for the castle.

Early Water Supply Solutions in The City Of Rome

Early Water Supply Solutions in The City Of Rome With the construction of the first elevated aqueduct in Rome, the Aqua Anio Vetus in 273 BC, individuals who lived on the city’s hillsides no longer had to depend entirely on naturally-occurring spring water for their needs. During this period, there were only 2 other technologies capable of delivering water to high areas, subterranean wells and cisterns, which gathered rainwater.Early Water Supply Solutions City Rome 00334558.jpg From the beginning of the sixteenth century, water was routed to Pincian Hill by using the underground channel of Acqua Vergine. As originally constructed, the aqueduct was provided along the length of its channel with pozzi (manholes) constructed at regular intervals. Whilst these manholes were developed to make it easier to protect the aqueduct, it was also feasible to use buckets to pull water from the channel, which was practiced by Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi from the time he bought the property in 1543 to his passing in 1552. Though the cardinal also had a cistern to amass rainwater, it couldn't provide enough water. To provide himself with a more practical means to obtain water, he had one of the manholes opened, giving him access to the aqueduct below his residence.
