At What Point Did Water Features Originate?
At What Point Did Water Features Originate? Pope Nicholas V, himself a well educated man, governed the Roman Catholic Church from 1397 to 1455 during which time he commissioned many translations of ancient classical Greek texts into Latin. Beautifying Rome and making it the worthy capital of the Christian world was at the core of his ambitions. Reconstruction of the Acqua Vergine, a ruined Roman aqueduct which had transported fresh drinking water into the city from eight miles away, began in 1453 at the behest of the Pope. Building a mostra, an imposing commemorative fountain built by ancient Romans to memorialize the entry point of an aqueduct, was a custom revived by Nicholas V. At the behest of the Pope, architect Leon Battista Alberti began the construction of a wall fountain in the place where we now find the Trevi Fountain. The Trevi Fountain as well as the well-known baroque fountains found in the Piazza del Popolo and the Piazza Navona were eventually supplied with water from the altered aqueduct he had rebuilt.

Leonardo da Vinci as a creative genius, inventor and scientific virtuoso exemplified this Renaissance creator. The forces of nature inspired him to investigate the qualities and motion of water, and due to his curiosity, he methodically documented his ideas in his now famed notebooks. Innovative water displays complete of symbolic significance and natural wonder converted private villa settings when early Italian water feature designers fused creativity with hydraulic and landscaping abilities. The humanist Pirro Ligorio, distinguished for his virtuosity in archeology, architecture and garden design, offered the vision behind the wonders in Tivoli. For the many mansions close to Florence, other water feature engineers were well versed in humanistic subject areas as well as classical scientific texts, masterminding the excellent water marbles, water features and water antics.
