With Royal mandates in Brussels, London and Germany, he started his work in Italy, acquiring experience in garden design and grottoes with incorporated and imaginative water features. “The Principles of Moving Forces”, a book that became the fundamental text on hydraulic technology and engineering, was composed by him towards the end of his life in France. The publication updated important hydraulic breakthroughs since classical antiquity as well as explaining modern day hydraulic technologies. Archimedes, the creator of the water screw, had his work showcased and these integrated a mechanized way to move water. Acqua Vergine: The Remedy to Rome's Water Troubles
Acqua Vergine: The Remedy to Rome's Water Troubles Rome’s 1st raised aqueduct, Aqua Anio Vetus, was built in 273 BC; prior to that, inhabitants living at higher elevations had to depend on local streams for their water. If people residing at higher elevations did not have access to springs or the aqueduct, they’d have to be dependent on the remaining existing solutions of the day, cisterns that collected rainwater from the sky and subterranean wells that received the water from below ground. Starting in the sixteenth century, a unique approach was introduced, using Acqua Vergine’s subterranean sectors to provide water to Pincian Hill. The aqueduct’s channel was made available by pozzi, or manholes, that were installed along its length when it was 1st designed. Whilst these manholes were developed to make it much easier to conserve the aqueduct, it was also possible to use buckets to pull water from the channel, which was employed by Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi from the time he obtained the property in 1543 to his death in 1552. He didn’t get an adequate amount water from the cistern that he had manufactured on his residential property to obtain rainwater. That is when he made the decision to create an access point to the aqueduct that ran directly below his residential property.
