In the years before electricity, the spray of fountains was powered by gravity only, commonly using an aqueduct or water resource located far away in the nearby mountains.

The kouroi were considered by the Greeks to embody beauty and were sculpted with one foot leading and an uncompromising firmness to their forward-facing poses; the male statues were always strapping, sinewy, and unclothed. In about 650 BC, the differences of the kouroi became life-sized.
