"Primitive" Greek Artwork: Large Statuary Up until the Archaic Greeks developed the 1st freestanding statuary, a noteworthy success, carvings had chiefly been done in walls and pillars as reliefs. Most of the freestanding statues were of young, winsome male or female (kore) Greeks and are referred to as kouros figures. The kouroi, considered by the Greeks to represent beauty, had one foot extended out of a fixed forward-facing posture and the male statues were always unclothed, with a strong, sturdy shape. The kouroi became life-sized commencing in 650 BC.
Throughout the Archaic period, a great time of change, the Greeks were evolving new forms of government, expressions of art, and a larger comprehension of people and cultures outside Greece. But these disputes did not prevent the growth of the Greek civilization. {
