Archaic Greeks were known for providing the first freestanding statuary; up until then, most carvings were constructed out of walls and pillars as reliefs. Most of these freestanding sculptures were what is known as kouros figures, statues of young, attractive male or female (kore) Greeks. Representing beauty to the Greeks, the kouroi were created to appear stiff and always had foot forward; the males were healthy, powerful, and naked. Life-sized versions of the kouroi appeared beginning in 650 BC. The Archaic period was tumultuous for the Greeks as they evolved into more polished forms of government and art, and acquired more information and facts about the peoples and societies outside of Greece. The Arcadian wars, the Spartan invasion of Samos, and other wars between city-states are good examples of the types of clashes that emerged commonly, which is consistent with other times of historical change.
