The Public Fountains
The Public Fountains
Water fountains were initially practical in purpose, used to convey water from canals or springs to cities and villages, supplying the residents with fresh water to drink, bathe, and cook with. A source of water higher in elevation than the fountain was necessary to pressurize the flow and send water squirting from the fountain's nozzle, a technology without equal until the late 19th century. Typically used as monuments and commemorative edifices, water fountains have impressed men and women from all over the world throughout the centuries. Simple in style, the first water fountains did not look much like present fountains. The 1st accepted water fountain was a natural stone basin carved that was used as a receptacle for drinking water and ceremonial functions. Natural stone basins as fountains have been discovered from 2000 BC. The spraying of water emerging from small jets was pushed by gravity, the only power source creators had in those days. These ancient fountains were created to be functional, frequently situated along reservoirs, creeks and rivers to provide drinking water. Fountains with flowery decoration began to appear in Rome in approx. 6 BC, commonly gods and creatures, made with stone or copper-base alloy. The impressive aqueducts of Rome provided water to the spectacular public fountains, many of which you can travel to today.
Attributes of Garden Statuary in Archaic Greece
Attributes of Garden Statuary in Archaic Greece Archaic Greeks were well known for providing the first freestanding statuary; up until then, most carvings were constructed out of walls and pillars as reliefs. Most of these freestanding sculptures were what is known as kouros figures, statues of young, attractive male or female (kore) Greeks. The kouroi were considered by the Greeks to embody beauty and were sculpted with one foot leading and an uncompromising rigidity to their forward-facing poses; the male statues were always strapping, brawny, and undressing. Life-sized versions of the kouroi appeared beginning in 650 BC. During the Archaic time, a great time of change, the Greeks were evolving new sorts of government, expressions of art, and a larger comprehension of people and cultures outside Greece. Notwithstanding, these battles did little to hamper the progress of the Greek civilization.
