Water Delivery Strategies in Historic Rome With the manufacturing of the first raised aqueduct in Rome, the Aqua Anio Vetus in 273 BC, people who lived on the city’s hillsides no longer had to rely solely on naturally-occurring spring water for their requirements. Outside of these aqueducts and springs, wells and rainwater-collecting cisterns were the only technologies readily available at the time to supply water to areas of greater elevation. Beginning in the sixteenth century, a new program was introduced, using Acqua Vergine’s subterranean segments to supply water to Pincian Hill. As originally constructed, the aqueduct was provided along the length of its channel with pozzi (manholes) constructed at regular intervals. While these manholes were manufactured to make it less difficult to conserve the aqueduct, it was also possible to use buckets to remove water from the channel, which was employed by Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi from the time he invested in the property in 1543 to his passing in 1552. The cistern he had made to obtain rainwater wasn’t sufficient to meet his water demands. That is when he made the decision to create an access point to the aqueduct that ran underneath his property.
