Statuary As a Staple of Classic Art in Historic Greece
Statuary As a Staple of Classic Art in Historic Greece The first freestanding statuary was designed by the Archaic Greeks, a notable achievement since until then the sole carvings in existence were reliefs cut into walls and columns. Most of these freestanding sculptures were what is known as kouros figures, statues of young, attractive male or female (kore) Greeks. Thought of by Greeks to characterize beauty, the kouroi were structured into stiff, forward facing positions with one foot outstretched, and the male statues were always nude, brawny, and athletic. Around 650 BC, life-sized versions of the kouroi began to be seen. The Archaic period was an incredible point of transformation for the Greeks as they expanded into new modes of government, created novel expressions of art, and achieved insights of the men and women and cultures outside of Greece. But in spite of the disputes, the Greek civilization continued to progress, unabated.

Contemporary Statuary in Old Greece
Historically, most sculptors were paid by the temples to decorate the elaborate columns and archways with renderings of the gods, but as the era came to a close it became more common for sculptors to present regular people as well simply because many Greeks had begun to think of their institution as superstitious rather than sacred. Portraiture, which would be accepted by the Romans upon their annexation of Greek society became conventional as well, and wealthy family members would often commission a portrait of their forebears to be situated in immense familial tombs. A time of aesthetic development, the use of sculpture and other art forms morphed during the Greek Classical period, so it is inexact to say that the arts provided only one function. Greek sculpture is possibly enticing to us nowadays seeing that it was an avant-garde experiment in the ancient world, so it doesn't matter whether its original function was religious zeal or artistic enjoyment.
