A Chronicle of Wall Fountains

A Chronicle of Wall Fountains Hundreds of classic Greek documents were translated into Latin under the authority of the scholarly Pope Nicholas V, who ruled the Roman Catholic Church from 1397 to 1455. It was imperative for him to embellish the city of Rome to make it worthy of being known as the capital of the Christian world. Starting in 1453, the ruined ancient Roman aqueduct known as the Aqua Vergine which had brought fresh drinking water into the city from eight miles away, underwent restoration at the behest of the Pope. The ancient Roman custom of building an imposing commemorative fountain at the point where an aqueduct arrived, also known as a mostra, was restored by Nicholas V. At the behest of the Pope, architect Leon Battista Alberti undertook the construction of a wall fountain in the place where we now find the Trevi Fountain. Changes and extensions, included in the repaired aqueduct, eventually provided the Trevi Fountain and the well-known baroque fountains in the Piazza del Popolo and Piazza Navona with the necessary water supply.

Statuary As a Staple of Vintage Art in Archaic Greece

Statuary As a Staple of Vintage Art in Archaic Greece Archaic Greeks were well known for developing the first freestanding statuary; up until then, most carvings were constructed out of walls and pillars as reliefs. For the most part the statues, or kouros figures, were of young and nice-looking male or female (kore) Greeks. Representing beauty to the Greeks, the kouroi were crafted to look rigid and typically had foot in front; the males were healthy, robust, and naked. In 650 BC, life-sized versions of the kouroi began to be seen. During the Archaic period, a big time of changes, the Greeks were developing new types of government, expressions of art, and a deeper comprehension of people and cultures outside Greece. Wars like The Arcadian wars, the Spartan invasion of Samos, and other wars between city-states are suggestive of the disruptive nature of the time, which was similar to other periods of historical disturbance. However, these conflicts did not significantly hinder the advancement of the Greek civilization.
