Anglo Saxon Grounds at the Time of the Norman Conquest

Anglo Saxon Grounds at the Time of the Norman Conquest The arrival of the Normans in the second half of the 11th century significantly modified The Anglo-Saxon ways of living. Architecture and gardening were attributes that the Normans excelled in, trumping that of the Anglo-Saxons at the time of the occupation. But before focusing on home-life or having the occasion to think about domestic architecture or decoration, the Normans had to subjugate an entire society. Monasteries and castles served different functions, so while monasteries were large stone structures constructed in only the most productive, wide dales, castles were set upon blustery knolls where the occupants focused on learning offensive and defensive practices. Relaxing activities such as gardening were out of place in these desolate citadels. The early Anglo-Norman style of architecture is represented in Berkeley Castle, which is perhaps the most unscathed illustration we have.Anglo Saxon Grounds Time Norman Conquest 7704040444301.jpg The keep is reported to have been developed during the time of William the Conqueror. A large terrace meant for strolling and as a means to stop enemies from mining below the walls runs about the building. One of these terraces, a charming bowling green, is covered grass and flanked by an old yew hedge trimmed into the figure of crude battlements.

The Outdoor Public Fountains

The Outdoor Public Fountains The water from creeks and other sources was originally provided to the citizens of nearby towns and cities by way of water fountains, whose purpose was largely practical, not aesthetic. In the years before electrical power, the spray of fountains was powered by gravity exclusively, usually using an aqueduct or water resource located far away in the nearby hills. Fountains throughout history have been crafted as memorials, impressing hometown citizens and tourists alike.Outdoor Public Fountains 508155101.jpg The contemporary fountains of today bear little similarity to the very first water fountains. Crafted for drinking water and ceremonial purposes, the 1st fountains were simple carved stone basins. Stone basins as fountains have been discovered from 2,000 BC. The first fountains put to use in ancient civilizations relied on gravity to manipulate the movement of water through the fountain. Situated near aqueducts or springs, the practical public water fountains supplied the local residents with fresh drinking water. Fountains with elaborate decoration started to show up in Rome in about 6 B.C., usually gods and creatures, made with natural stone or copper-base alloy. The extraordinary aqueducts of Rome delivered water to the incredible public fountains, most of which you can travel to today.
