Archaic Greek Artwork: Garden Statuary Archaic Greeks were renowned for creating the first freestanding statuary; up until then, most carvings were made out of walls and pillars as reliefs.
Kouros figures, sculptures of young, attractive male or female (kore) Greeks, made up the majority of the statues. The kouroi were believed by the Greeks to embody beauty and were sculpted with one foot leading and an uncompromising firmness to their forward-facing poses; the male statues were always strapping, brawny, and undressing. The kouroi grew to be life-sized starting in 650 BC. A massive period of improvement for the Greeks, the Archaic period brought about more forms of government, expressions of artwork, and a greater appreciation of people and customs outside of Greece. But in spite of the disputes, the Greek civilization went on to progress, unabated.
