The Godfather Of Roman Outdoor Fountains
The Godfather Of Roman Outdoor Fountains There are numerous popular water features in the city center of Rome.
Pretty much all of them were planned, designed and built by one of the finest sculptors and designers of the 17th century, Gian Lorenzo Bernini. Also a city builder, he had skills as a fountain developer, and remnants of his life's work are obvious throughout the roads of Rome. Bernini's father, a renowned Florentine sculptor, mentored his young son, and they ultimately moved to Rome, in order to fully express their art, primarily in the form of public water fountains and water features. The young Bernini received praise from Popes and relevant artists alike, and was an excellent employee. At the start he was recognized for his sculptural expertise. An authority in classic Greek architecture, he used this knowledge as a base and melded it seamlessly with Roman marble, most notably in the Vatican. Though he was influenced by many, Michelangelo had the most serious impact on him, both personally and professionally.
The Original Outdoor Water Feature Artists
The Original Outdoor Water Feature Artists Often serving as architects, sculptors, artists, engineers and highly educated scholars all in one, from the 16th to the late 18th century, fountain designers were multi-talented people, Leonardo da Vinci, a Renaissance artist, was notable as an inspired intellect, inventor and scientific virtuoso. The forces of nature inspired him to examine the properties and movement of water, and due to his fascination, he methodically documented his findings in his now celebrated notebooks. Remodeling private villa configurations into innovative water displays packed with symbolic significance and natural wonder, early Italian fountain designers paired creativity with hydraulic and gardening knowledge. The humanist Pirro Ligorio, renowned for his virtuosity in archeology, architecture and garden design, provided the vision behind the wonders in Tivoli. Other water feature designers, masterminding the fantastic water marbles, water attributes and water antics for the many estates in the vicinity of Florence, were tried and tested in humanistic themes and classical scientific texts.
