Bernini: The Genius Behind Italy's Greatest Water Fountains
Bernini: The Genius Behind Italy's Greatest Water Fountains The Barcaccia, a stunning fountain constructed at the base of the Trinita dei Monti in Piaza di Spagna, was Bernini's earliest fountain. This area is still filled with Roman locals and visitors who enjoy exchanging gossip or going over the day's news. Today, the city streets around Bernini's fountain are a trendy place where people go to meet, something which the artist would have been pleased to learn. In around 1630, Pope Urbano VIII helped Bernini start off his professional life with the construction of his first water fountain. A large ship slowly sinking into the Mediterranean is the fountain's main theme. According to 16th century reports, a great flood of the Tevere covered the entire area in water, an event which was commemorated by the tremendous fountain. In what turned out to be his one and only prolonged absence from Italy, Bernini {journeyed | traveled] to France in 1665.
Sculpture As a Staple of Classic Art in Archaic Greece
Sculpture As a Staple of Classic Art in Archaic Greece Archaic Greeks were renowned for creating the first freestanding statuary; up till then, most carvings were made out of walls and pillars as reliefs. Most of these freestanding sculptures were what is known as kouros figures, statues of young, attractive male or female (kore) Greeks. The kouroi, viewed as by the Greeks to represent beauty, had one foot stretched out of a rigid forward-facing posture and the male figurines were always undressed, with a powerful, sturdy physique. In about 650 BC, the variations of the kouroi became life-sized. During the Archaic period, a big time of changes, the Greeks were developing new types of government, expressions of art, and a better awareness of people and cultures outside Greece. Similar to other periods of historical conflict, conflicts were commonplace, and there were battles between city-states like The Arcadian wars, the Spartan invasion of Samos.
