There are many famous water fountains in Rome’s city center. One of the greatest sculptors and artists of the 17th century, almost all of them were planned, conceived and built by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. He was furthermore a urban designer, in addition to his expertise as a water fountain designer, and remnants of his life's work are evident all through the streets of Rome. To fully exhibit their artwork, mainly in the form of community water fountains and water features, Bernini's father, a celebrated Florentine sculptor, mentored his young son, and they ultimately moved in the City of Rome. An exemplary employee, Bernin earned compliments and the patronage of popes and well known painters. He was originally recognized for his sculpture. Most famously in the Vatican, he used a base of experience in classic Greek architecture and melded it seamlessly with Roman marble. He was affected by many a great artists, however, Michelangelo had the biggest impact on his work.
