"Primitive" Greek Artwork: Outdoor Statuary
"Primitive" Greek Artwork: Outdoor Statuary Archaic Greeks were renowned for developing the first freestanding statuary; up till then, most carvings were formed out of walls and pillars as reliefs. For the most part the statues, or kouros figures, were of young and desirable male or female (kore) Greeks. Considered by Greeks to embody skin care, the kouroi were structured into firm, forward facing poses with one foot outstretched, and the male statues were usually nude, well-developed, and fit. The kouroi became life-sized beginning in 650 BC. The Archaic period was an incredible point of change for the Greeks as they grew into new modes of government, produced novel expressions of art, and attained knowledge of the men and women and cultures outside of Greece. But in spite of the conflicts, the Greek civilization went on to advance, unabated.
Early Water Delivery Techniques in Rome
Early Water Delivery Techniques in Rome Prior to 273, when the first elevated aqueduct, Aqua Anio Vetus, was constructed in Rome, residents who resided on hillsides had to go even further down to gather their water from natural sources. Outside of these aqueducts and springs, wells and rainwater-collecting cisterns were the only technological innovations available at the time to supply water to segments of greater elevation.
From the beginning of the sixteenth century, water was routed to Pincian Hill by using the subterranean channel of Acqua Vergine. All through the length of the aqueduct’s channel were pozzi, or manholes, that gave entry. While these manholes were manufactured to make it easier to protect the aqueduct, it was also feasible to use containers to pull water from the channel, which was practiced by Cardinal Marcello Crescenzi from the time he invested in the property in 1543 to his death in 1552. He didn’t get a sufficient quantity of water from the cistern that he had built on his property to gather rainwater. Through an opening to the aqueduct that flowed underneath his property, he was in a position to satisfy his water needs.
